Continuing the series on what makes a GOOD manufacturing organisation we come to:

Manufacturing Effectiveness 8 – Inbound Logistics

The sections controlling the logistics feed to the production operation – Planning, Purchasing, Goods Inwards & Material Stores will deliver components required for manufacture/assembly at the right time and at the best available cost, when performing in an optimal manner. When, inevitably, circumstances conspire to undermine optimal conditions, they will balance the requirements of cost and delivery, tending to a consistent default based on an approved strategy; they will keep meaningful records in order that positive remedial action can be initiated after ‘the dust has settled‘; and finally, they will keep internal customers fully informed of all logistical deviations from plan, making comprehensible shortage reports easy to access by Production Management.
